What is an Intruder Alarm?
There are many systems to choose from that fit particular business needs, with two main types of intruder alarms that operate differently from each other; a wired or wireless system.
A wired intruder alarm is the most commonly used system. Wired systems comprise of a main control panel, motion sensors, panic alarms and break glass sensors.
Wired intruder alarms require wires running to each of the sensors on the system, which are then hidden away out of site.
A wireless system works in the same as a wired system, however detection is relayed to the control panel via radio frequencies.
Wireless intruder alarms are best suited to the following locations:
- Properties of heritage and historical significance
- Buildings that cannot afford the time and disruption that wiring installation can cause
- Temporary installations
- Buildings where an intruder alarm is required promptly
Installing a wireless system is much quicker than a wired system – the average detector takes 5 minutes to install as compared with 4-6 hours for a wired system.

Choosing an Intruder Alarm
When you have a requirement for an intruder alarm in your business, you will need to assess which entry points and locations you wish to have covered. This investigation will identify where alarm detectors should be placed in order to give the optimum security coverage.

Intruder Alarm Grading
Grade 2 - Medium Risk
For a Grade 2 system, potential thieves are expected to have an interest due to the property having items of value on site, and therefore are expected to have limited knowledge and tools to compromise the system.
Typical applications – household and low risk commercial.
Grade 3 - Medium Risk
Properties with significantly high value items benefit from Grade 3 systems. It is likely that potential thieves have knowledge and a range of tools at their disposal to compromise the intruder alarm.
Typical applications – Commercial and high value properties.
Grade 4 - High Risk
Persons targeting properties with a Grade 4 system would be sophisticated in their theft. They would likely have a plan, detailed information and access to a number of tools to compromise the system.
Typical applications – banks, museums, art galleries.
Alarm Signalling
Bells are the most basic option of intruder alarm signalling. As the system is triggered, a loud alarm sounds to signify that an intruder has entered, or is attempting to enter, the premises. The bell sounding can be suited to the specific location in high density areas (such as a housing estate) where the alarm can be responded to by people in the area, the police force or neighbours.
The monitored system can alert in two different ways. A nominated key holder can be alerted, or the signal is sent to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). If part of the service agreement, the ARC can then alert the key holder or initiate a police or security response.
Intruder Alarm Servicing
Ongoing maintenance and alarm servicing of the system by a competent approved security systems company should be carried out.
Your intruder alarm maintenance will include a call out facility with a minimum response time as per the agreement. This will ensure any emergencies are attended to promptly.
All intruder alarm systems should have a preventative maintenance visit where tests are carried out to ensure the system operates at an optimum level and any failing parts are replaced before they cause a major malfunction. These tests should be carried out annually.
