The Client
A medical site located on a UK RAF base required a comprehensive access control upgrade to improve security across the facility. The project involved installing access control across the entire medical site including multiple buildings while maintaining normal clinical operations. We had to adapt to operating under US Door regulations rather that the UK standards that we are more familiar and experienced with.

The Challenge
Healthcare environments present unique installation challenges. Work had to be completed in an active medical facility where patient care takes priority and areas such as wards and maternity units can become unavailable at short notice. This required a high level of flexibility and careful coordination with the facilities team.
The scale of the project was also significant, with approximately 216 access-controlled doors requiring installation including a secure network for the access control.
In addition to operational constraints, strict site access procedures and security protocols meant that all engineers had to follow regulated access procedures when attending site.
The Solution
Churches Fire & Security secured the project through a competitive tender process and deployed a dedicated engineering team to deliver the installation.
The project involved:
- Installation of access control across approximately 216 site doors
- Integration of a secure standalone access control system
- Careful coordination with medical staff to avoid disruption to clinical activity
- Maintaining a clean and controlled working environment appropriate for a healthcare setting
- Adapting installation schedules in response to changing operational requirements
The site remained fully operational during the works, meaning the engineering team had to work closely with the facilities team and remain flexible. If areas of the site became unavailable due to clinical use, the team adjusted their work programme and moved to other areas where possible.
Additional measures were also implemented to maintain cleanliness within the healthcare environment, including the use of filtered drilling equipment to minimise dust during installation.
The Outcome
The installation was completed successfully and delivered a secure access control infrastructure across the entire medical facility. The project was completed over 12 months, reflecting both the scale of the installation and the need to work around a live healthcare environment. The completed system provides enhanced access management across the medical site while supporting the operational needs of the facility.
