The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have begun consulting on a proposed UK REACH restriction for PFAS in firefighting foams. This consultation marks the next step in the UK’s move towards tighter environmental regulation around per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are commonly used in some firefighting agents.
The consultation process is currently underway, with a public consultation expected in 2025. It is unlikely that any new restrictions will be implemented before 2026, but future UK legislation is expected to follow a phased approach similar to the EU’s proposal. This would include:
- 18 months for firefighter training and system testing
- 5 years for portable extinguishers, marine, aviation and defence applications
- 10 years for offshore installations, major industrial sites, and naval or civil ships
