What Is A Dry Riser?
Dry Riser systems are permanently installed pipework, positioned to aid firefighters in tackling fires on upper building levels. The system design enables firefighters to connect hoses to the Dry Riser inlet valve at ground level and pump water up the dry pipe to strategically positioned landing valves throughout the building, ensuring effective fire suppression efforts.
Unlike Wet Risers, Dry systems are empty and not charged with water. The pipes rely on water drawn from fire engine pumps or the nearest fire hydrant.
Who Needs Dry Risers?
In the UK, BS 9990:2015 states that buildings and properties over 18m, approximately 6 stories, must install Dry Risers. Typically used in high-rise buildings and flats, especially social housing, they remove the need for firefighters to run hoses up several floors.
Dry Risers’ Crucial Role in Fire Safety
With a system comprising of vertical pipes positioned at the outer edges of a building, a Dry Riser system provides instant access to water in an emergency. Saving firefighters from running long hoses through a building, hoses from fire engines are attached to inlet valves at ground level. The water is pumped into the system and a hose located at the outlet (located throughout the building on all floors) is used to extinguish the fire.
Their place in firefighting is crucial as they save time, resource and allow for a rapid response in a time-sensitive emergency situation. The use of Dry Risers can significantly speed up the process of the putting out fires as they are fought from inside the building, not via external cranes and ladders.
Dry Riser Maintenance
To ensure compliance with BS 9990:2015, the Responsible Person or building owner must make provisions for full tests annually and visual inspections every 6 months. Annual tests include pressure testing, where water is pushed through the pipes to check for any leaks.
Through regular maintenance and testing, you can have peace of mind that the system will perform correctly in an emergency situation. Our team of technicians are trained in the servicing and fixing of Dry Risers, carrying out repairs promptly to ensure minimal system downtime.
